Ella Fitzgerald Shine |
For this item you need to be able to stop for ten minutes.
We are often moving on to the next job, the next meeting, scrolling down social media, taking the next call ......'Time Out Ten' asks you to stop for ten minutes and listen to a particular piece of music; to find a time when you won't be interrupted, when you can put in/on your headphones and chill out. Ten minutes isn't long.
"A little smile can really make your day" (Donald Fagen lyrics)
In the the town where I used to live, nobody made eye contact in the street. Where I live now, people smile and say 'Hello' or 'Good Morning'. It is a conspicuously noticeable difference. I find I begin to do the same. Smiles are a bit like yawns - they are catching.
There are some great quotes about smiles:
"Before you put on a frown, make absolutely sure there are no smiles available." (Jim Beggs)
“It only takes a split second to smile and forget, yet to someone that needed it, it can last a lifetime.” (Steve Maraboli)
For our time out ten minutes this month, here's Ella Fitzgerald and her Savoy Eight and Shine from 1937. The band was recruited from the Chick Webb Orchestra and it is Taft Jordan playing trumpet behind Ella's vocal and Ted (Teddy) McRae (nicknamed Mr Bear) who picks up the saxophone solo that follows.
So sometime today, give someone a smile.
