The caption to the photo in the Gallery 'Bob Craig and the Spirits of Rhythm' is erroneous. Bob was never in the Spirits of Rhythm, and these are not all the Spirits' band members - except Kenny's drum is marked with the Spirits name on because he used it as a member of that band (the only member in the photo).
In the photo: Jim Young (bass), Dave Paxton (clarinet), Kenny Milne (drums), Al Fairweather (trumpet), Bob Craig (trombone), Graham Scott (piano).
I'm the reed player in the Spirits of Rhythm, playing clarinet, tenor sax (and sometimes alto sax). I'm using the present tense because the band is still playing. I also play in Bill Salmond's Louisiana ragtime band.
In 1979, pianist Violet Milne (piano) formed the New Orleans style 'Spirits of Rhythm' which includes her husband Kenny (drums), George Duncan then Ian Boyter (now) (reeds), Jack Weddell then Alan Quinn (now) (trombone), Fraser Gauld then Dave Strutt (trumpet) (we play without a trumpet player now), Nigel Porteous (banjo) and Brian Weld (now) (banjo, tenor guitar), Robin Galloway, Willie Mack, then Fred Murray, Roy Percy and now Dizzy Jackson (bass). We've recorded with Sam Lee and have backed the jazz singer Lillian Boute at the Edinburgh Jazz Festival.
Through the years we've played mostly in Edinburgh and environs, but have played Jazz Festivals in Keswick, Bute, Bude, Glasgow, Shetland, Orkney, Peebles, and Ascona, Davos, Celerina in Switzerland and jazz tours in the Algarve. I'm working on producing a new website dedicated to Edinburgh jazz history with Norrie Thomson and Graham Blamire, but it's not online yet.
